The Scheltemabeker was a price for the loosing finalist of the Scheepvaartbeker competition which was won, in the three years the tournament was held, by Stormvogels, Ajax and AFC. After it was decided to discontinue the Scheepvaartbeker tournament the past winners of the Scheltema cup were invited to determine who could keep the cup permanently.
