Red Bull Salzburg: Biggest Comeback or Biggest Elimination
02/28/2014
After the 3-0 home defeat against Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League in 2013-14 there was still a theoretical possibility to go to the next round, but the past shows us that Ajax has never been able to make such a comeback. Not so strange considering that Ajax never before during the knockout phase of an European tournament lost the first match at home with 0-3. So if Ajax would have been able to achieve the impossible, it would have been the biggest comeback in its history, an honor currently shared with 3 earlier controntations from the 60ies and 70ies. The most memorable of these is no doubt the confrontation with Benfica in season 1968-69 for which, after two times 1-3, a third decisive match was required which Ajax won. However the reality was that Ajax also lost the return, with 3-1, causing this confrontation to end up in a different list, one of biggest eliminations, in a shared first place with an Europe Cup II confrontaion with Tottenham Hotspur from the season 1981-82.
