De draw for the group stage of the champions league linked Ajax to Barcelona, PSG and APOEL Nicosia. Barcelona is the only one of the three opponents that Ajax played against before in official matches, the champions league confrontations from last season. This summer former Ajax players Luis Suarez and Thomas Vermaelen were contracted by Barcelona.
