Opponent in the Spotlight: PSG
09/15/2014
Ajax plays Wednesday at 20:45 the first match for the Champions League, against
PSG.
Ajax and PSG have not met before, but French opposition is not unfamiliar to Ajax.
The first official matches against French clubs were a double confrontation against
Nancy for the intertoto in season
1961-62, which were both won
by Ajax.
More recent Ajax regularly met with French opposition in the Champions League, and often for these
meetings considered over two games the points were shared. Except in season
2002-03, when Ajax beat
Olympique Lyon twice.
Currently there are three former Ajax players under contract at PSG:
Zlatan Ibrahimovic,
Maxwell
and Gregory van der Wiel.
Two years ago Ajax took over Ilan Boccara from
the PSG youth academy.
Referee Wolfgang Stark
is no stranger to Ajax. The two official matches that were previously refereed by him both ended in
a draw.
Ajax was able to remain unbeaten in its home games for the Champions League last season. It was even
able to win two of them. Ajax was unable to continue that run in the Europa League, and we are about to
find out whether on the highest platform Ajax is able to continue the run. If Ajax wants to compete for the top
two spots, it needs to get a result.
