Milik, Menig and the Match in the Record Books
09/25/2014
Not only did Arek Milik and
Queensy Menig play themselves in the record books of
respectively the players with most goals in one match and the players who scored during their official debut,
but also the final score itself got a place in the books. The fact that the opponent was just an amateur club
does not diminish any of these achievements.
Arek Milik got a place on the list of topscorers
during one match between players such as
Piet van Reenen (7 goals),
Johan Cruijff and
Marco van Basten. The names of these 3 players
appear multiple times on the list with matches in which a players scores 4 or more times (in the case of Van Reenen
this happened 12! times). Of course for Arek Milik we still have to see whether this will happen multiple times, but
for now his name is already there, in the top part of the list.
Queensy Menig was to the day as old as (or better as young as) Aron Winter when he scored during his official debut and
placed himself on the exclusive list of Ajax players who
scored during their official debut, a list that next to the earlier mentioned Marco van Basten and Johan Cruijff contains the
names of so many great players of Ajax' rich history. The names of
Rob Rijnink and
Clyde Wijnhard, who were roughly of the same age
as Queensy Menig when they scored during their debut, illustrates that a position on this list does not give any guarantee
for a successful career at Ajax.
When you hear some fans talking about the past you also believe that in the past Ajax won a few matches with
double digits each season, and that each amateur team that Ajax encountered as an opponent in the Dutch cup was squashed.
Even Frank de Boer gives the impression that a 0-9 away win is normal by indicating that Ajax should have won the
Dutch Cup match against JOS
with double digits. The facts are however that in Ajax' rich history in official matches Ajax was only able to have
a better result 12 times, of which only 5 times since the introduction of professional soccer. With this match the team
was able to play itself in the list of biggest wins.
