Frank de Boer Wants to Buy Players
01/09/2016
Frank de Boer seems to want to return to the old situation where the head coach of Ajax along with others that only have short term targets get a transfer amount that they can use to achieve their objectives, regardless of the long-term vision. Right now Frank de Boer wants to enter the transfer market with Marc Overmars to strengthen the squad with a striker, he finds the controlling role carried out by the Supervisory Board on transfers, they seem indeed to play very close attention, strange, and also would like to be able to deviate from the salary cap. He wants to invest to secure the championship.
From the perspective of Frank it is perhaps surprising that the SB is on top of things, but this is definitely not the case when seen from the club Ajax. Spending too much money on transfers and wages has not only Ajax brought Ajax into trouble in the past, but also numerous other football clubs, and it makes sense to monitor closely how this money is spent. Frank de Boer makes a painful mistake with the claim that the football know-how is with him and Marc Overmars because, with Theo van Duivenbode there is someone in the SB that can also make football technical considerations.
Having said that, there is some reason for criticism on the role of the Supervisory Board. Why did they last year approve the transfers of Daley Sinkgraven and Nemanja Gudelj without selling other players? Why were in more or less the same period the contracts of other midfielders, who can now hardly count on playing time, extended (Thulani Serero, Lucas Andersen and Lasse Schone). The Supervisory Board knew that with Riechedly Bazoer, Donny van de Beek and Abdelhak Nouri very talented midfielders were knocking on the door. And Lerin Duarte is still on the payroll, and Frenkie de Jong is transferred, and Frank de Boer sees John Heitinga as a defensive midfielder ...
If Frank de Boer would think in the long term interest of Ajax and objectively would look at the composition of the selection, you might actually expect that he would like the influence of the Supervisory Board on transfers increased, not decreased. Although it is unclear to which players the money went, last season a record of 31.7 million euros was spent on transfers. With this the amount of money of the current players on the balance sheet also reached a high point. If at the same time the head coach feels that his squad lacks experience and at a certain position (striker) is not strong enough we can conclude something is not right.
Deviating from the salary ceiling sounds like a simple step, but it weakens the bargaining power of Ajax in future contract negotiations with all players and will eventually lead to higher wage costs and / or the inability to attract players. This too is a decision for which the Supervisory Board must keep an eye on the long term, not the short-term needs by Frank de Boer.
Our prediction, Frank de Boer will have to do with the group he has now for the remainder of this season, and that should be fine. Besides Arek Milik from the current selection also Anwar El-Ghazi, Viktor Fischer, Lasse Schone and Davy Klaassen can fill the role of center forward, while Sam Hendriks and Kasper Dolberg from the youth are also options. This is not a guarantee for the championship, but neither is attracting a player halfway through the season.
