In Memoriam Ton Pronk
08/28/2016
Friday August 26 Ton Pronk passed away as a consequence of the disease ALS at 75 years old. Ton Pronk played many matches together with Johan Cruyff and Gert Bals who passed away earlier this year.
From 1960 to 1969 Ton Pronk belonged to the starting lineup of Ajax 1 for nine seasons and during that period he won four league titles and three Dutch Cups. He played 335 official matches and scored eight times. After losing the European Cup final in 1969, the role of Ton Pronk in Ajax 1 was finished. Coach Rinus Michels did not criticize Ton Pronks (or Bennie Mullers) soccer qualities, but in his eyes he lacked the toughness, the meanness in his game, which he saw as a necessity to reach the very top.
Ton Pronk played a few more season at FC Utrecht and returned after his playing career at Ajax, where he remained active until his retirement in 2007. First as a scout, then as coach of Ajax 2, and finally a long period as head scout.
