Dutch Competition
At the start of the season the two soccer associations started with separate competition and Ajax led the First Division B after nine rounds. After the associations agreed to merge new competitions were started, in which Ajax, in the First Division D, also had a good season, but ended behind the new division championship Eindhoven and VVV. In the champions competition Eindhoven ended in the last spot.
Beker
There was no Dutch Cup competition during this season.
Lineup
Especially in the defense and midfield Ajax played with the same lineup throughout the season: Eddy Pieters Graafland (goalkeeper), Ger van Mourik and Cor Geelhuizen (defense), Klaas Bakker, Henk Elzer and Ge van Dijk (midfield and stopper spil), Loek den Edel, Piet Burgers, Rinus Michels, Joop Butter and Jacques Brokx (attack). Unknown who was the captain. Both Bakker and Van Dijk played on midfield this season, while playing mostly in attack in the previous season. The following players played frequently in attack: Arend van der Wel (13), Henk Winter (9), Toon Standaar (4) and Leen Bartels (3). The following players also played official matches:Jan van Drecht (6), Bobby Haarms (4), Jaap van Veen (4), Han Velder (2), Rob Bartelsman (1), Jo Behrens (1), Co Bouwens (1) en Jan van 't Kruis (1).
Coach
Karl Humenberger was the trainer.
Professional Soccer
Early July it was announced that Ajax would loose 3 players to the new professional soccer association. This was regarding Gerrit Krist, Hans Boskamp en Aad Visser. Later it was announced that Wim Huis went to Fortuna 54 where also former Ajax player Cor van der Hart was playing. Gerrit Krist later played for Ajax, but from October onwards he played for BVC Den Haag.
Marius Koolhaas
Early September, when also for the Dutch soccer association (KNVB) financial compensation was allowed, and Ajax' first team players threatened with a strike when the board came with an, in their eyes, too low proposal for payment, a period of several weeks started in which there were several discussions between the board and the first team players.
Merger of Soccer Assocations
At the end of October Ajax took the initiative to bring the two soccer assocations together and ultimately talks led to a merger of the two associations in November. The competitions were stopped and a new joint competition was started.
Rolf Leeser
Rolf Leeser already owned a successful company when the professional soccer was introduced. He is not interested to pursue a career as a professional soccer player and leaves Ajax for AFC. Co Bouwens followed him later.
Reorganization
Ajax reacts fast on the changed situation and after advise from a committee that had been active during the season 1954-55, at the end of the season Ajax started implementing a new organization structure with a subdivision between amateur and professional soccer.
