Ajax has a hard time preseason and during the first rounds, as newcomer in the first division. Ajax looses 5 games in a row. Afterwards Ajax regularly gets points and is able to finish 8th.
To make the national cup competition more attractive for the first division teams they will only have to enter during the third round. Ajax participates and the draw links them to Achilles in the third round. Ajax only comes with 3 of their regular players and is beaten with a high margin (7-0).
Ajax has about 14 players whom are regularly used. There is not really one fixed basis when everyone is available, and there are also some position changes. Players who played regularly are: Gerard Ziegeler (goal), Karel van der Lee and Frans Schoevaart (in the newspapers he is often referred to with his nickname Swift) (defense) Adriaan Pelser, Jan Schoevaart and Ge Fortgens (midfield and stopper spil), Henk Alofs, Toon Kooi, Piet van den Broecke, Jan Grootmeijer and Louis Seijlhouwer (attack). Note that Adriaan Pelser did not play many matches and because of that Toon Kooi was often placed on the midfield. Frits Terwee (8) and Joop Pelser (7) also play regularly. Chris Kammeijer, Chris Holst, Wim Beuker, Van Stiften and Anton Buijen play few matches. Ajax starts with Henk Schutte in goal, but he makes many mistakes, Jan Schindeler is used once, which also doesnt seem to be a success. After that Gerard Ziegeler is tried out as goalkeeper, and he is the goalkeeper for the remainder of the season. Karel van der Lee is captain.
John Kirwan is the coach, just like the previous season. He plays a few friendly matches with Ajax as well.
It is difficult to be sure which Pelser played because often they are not mentioned in match reports with their first name. Adriaan Pelser was playing often in season 1910-11 and often was simply referred to as Pelser. In 1910-11 he was once replaced by Pelser Jr, which we assume is Joop Pelser. Pelser Jr is used more often in 1911-12. Also in 1911-12 J. Pelser (again Joop) and M. Pelser are used. This could be referring to Fons Pelser (whose full name is Alphonsus Johannes Maria), because the A (Adriaan) and J (Joop) are not unique. M. Pelser is playing one match together with A Pelser on September 10, 1911. What makes things more complicated is the inconsistency in newspaper reports. There are matches were the same played is referred to as Pelser Jr., J. Pelser and M. Pelser in 3 different newspapers.
Just as with the Pelser brothers there are also two Schoevaarts that play for Ajax, Frans and Jan. The problem who is who seems to be resolved by addressing Frans Schoevaart with a nickname, Swift.
Ajax has a lot of difficulty preseason and at the start of the competition in the first division. Main causes for the many lost matches is goalkeeper Henk Schuttes poor form and the too individualistic play of the forwards. Henk Schutte is first replaced for one match by Jan Schindeler and subsequently by the very young Gerard Ziegeler (just 17 when he makes his debut during a friendly match against Go Ahead at the end of October. Gerard Ziegeler completes the season.
In March a few changes in the rules are proposed by the English soccer association. One of them is that goalkeepers are only allowed to use their hands within the penalty area. Up till then it is the complete own half. Another is that off side can only happen when the player is within 18 yards of the backline.
At the end of the season Ajax decides to celebrate their 12 1/2 year existence on September 18 1912. Ajax also decides to keep on John Kirwan for another season. John Kirwan not only trained Ajax but also played during a few friendly matches.
During a friendly match end May against the Wiener Sportklub the Ajax players leave the pitch 20 minues before the match ends because they feel the opponents plays to aggressively, injuring several of their players, and the refree refuses to take measures. Later the Austrian soccer association announces it will report this to FIFA, because Ajax has been payed to play this match. Also the Dutch soccer association announces it will investigate.
The annual general meeting is held end of June. Things are going well, there is a growing number of members, at that moment a total of 600 working member and donating members. There is over 22000 Dutch guilders income over the past season and that is considered a lot. For the celebration of the 12 1/2 year existince 1500 guilders are reserved. The board is elected as follows: 1e president Holst, 2e president Lettinga, 1e secretary Schutte, 2e secretary P. Welsink Jr., 1e treasurer Egeman, 2e treasurer C.B. Reeser, committee members Van den Berg, Besselsen, J.G. Rauch. As representatives for the Amsterdam soccer association annual general meeting J.G. Rauch, Van den Berg, Lettinga, Besselsen are elected. And for the Dutch soccer association J.G. Rauch is elected. It is decided that seats will be arranged for donating members during the matches.
After the promotion Ajax has, before the start of the new season, improved the facilities significantly. Both the pitch itself, but also the changing rooms for players and referees are improved. Also a coverend stand and a stand for standing are introduced. The people call this Het Houten Stadion (The Wooden Stadium) and it is one of the best facilities of its time and as such considered for international matches and as neutral ground for club matches.
Information about lineups and goalscorers this season is incomplete and unreliable. The main source used are newspaper reports and information often differs between different newspapers, sometimes newspapers also explicitly mention it is unknown when a goal is scored, and it is common that it is only mentioned that certain regular players are not playing, not who is playing instead. As much as possible we try to point out the information we are uncertain about.
