News

Dutch Competition

Ajax played in a division with mostly northern teams. It was soon clear Ajax would win the competition and the 9 point lead would have been larger if Ajax would not have lost its last 4 matches after the division championship was secured. This easy division championship was followed by a very poor performance in the champions competition. Ajax lost 5 matches in a row and was only in the last match able to have a draw and score the only point. Ofcourse the opposition in the champions competition was stronger, but Ajax was also forced by injuries and a suspension to deviate from the lineup that brought the division championship, which was not beneficial for the result.

Beker

There was no Dutch Cup competition during this season.

Lineup

The following players were used a lot: Aad Visser (goalkeeper), Jan Potharst and Hans Boskamp (defense), Gerrit Krist, Henk Elzer and Co Bouwens (midfield and stopper spil), Klaas Bakker, Ge van Dijk, Rinus Michels, Arend van der Wel, and Leen Bartels (attack). Potharst was the captain. Except for Potharst, Bouwens, Van Dijk and Michels the complete lineup was different from the previous season. Rinus Michels went to France to play test matches in the beginning of the season, and was not allowed to play for a while. Because of this amongst others Theo de Groot (16) and Eef Westers (11) came in action a lot. The following players also played official matches: Guus Dräger (7), Frist van Brienen (6), Ruud Saarloos (4), Jan Wolterink (4), Rolf Leeser (3), Toon Standaar (3), Ad Waldeck (3), Jan Ditmeijer (2), Ger van Mourik (2), Wim Anderiesen Jr. (1), Jan Bouquet (1), Wim Focken (1), Wim Huis (1), Henk Klopper (1), Wim Rozeboom (1) en Han Velder (1).

Robert Thomson was the trainer.

Rinus Michels

Early September Rinus Michels had his farewell because he had signed a contract at Lille to play professional soccer. End October Michels came back after only playing a few test matches in France. When Ajax wanted to play him again the Dutch soccer assocation stopped this, they wanted to do an investigation into the time Michels spent in France. It took until December 11 until the soccer assocation let Ajax know that their investigation had shown that Michels had not violated the amateur regulations, so he could play for Ajax again.

Substitutes

It is not known to us what exactly the regulations were with respect to substitutes before this season, but for this season it is explicitly mentioned that it is only allowed to substitute 1 field player and 1 goalkeeper. The way it was formulated implied that in previous seasons more substitutes were allowed, which matches with out information.

Austria Trip

June 30 Ajax left for a 4 day trip to Austria to play some soccer matches in Salzburg, Linz and Innsbruck. There is only one match known to us, unknown whether more matches were actually played. Michels and Boskamp did not join as they participated in an international tournament in Turkey with the militairy squad.
